Nourishing Your Body:
Nutrition Tips for Longevity After 50

As we journey through life, one of our most precious assets is undoubtedly our health. And when it comes to nurturing our well-being, few things are as important as the food we nourish our bodies with, mentally, physically, and emotionally. If you’re seeking to promote longevity and vitality well into your golden years, adopting a wholesome approach to nutrition is the key.

Here are some gentle and nourishing tips tailored specifically for you as you embrace the beautiful journey of life after 50:

  1. Embrace Whole Foods: Fill your plate with a rainbow of  vegetables, proteins and fruits. These nutrient-dense foods provide essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that support overall health and vitality.

2.  Opt for Healthy Fats: Include sources of healthy fats in your diet, such as avocados, nuts, seeds, and fatty fish like wild-caught salmon. These fats support heart health, brain function, and overall well-being.

3.  Plant-Based Meals: Incorporate plants in your diet, such as hearty salads and vegetable stir-fries. These are rich in fiber, antioxidants, and phytonutrients, which promote longevity and protect against chronic disease. Be sure you’ve added enough protein.  How much? Probably more than you’re eating!

4.  Mindful Eating: Practice mindful eating by savoring each bite, chewing slowly, and paying attention to your body’s hunger and fullness cues. Eating mindfully can enhance digestion, prevent overeating, and promote a greater appreciation for food.  I like to pray that my food will bless and nourish me.

5.  Hydration is Key: Stay hydrated throughout the day by drinking plenty of water, herbal teas, and hydrating foods like fruits and vegetables. Proper hydration supports cellular function, digestion, and overall vitality.  I drink a gallon of water every day and add electrolytes to replace minerals.

6.  Limit Processed Foods: Minimize your intake of processed and packaged foods, which often contain unhealthy fats, sugars, and additives. Instead, focus on whole, minimally processed foods that nourish your body and support longevity.

7.  Practice Moderation: Enjoy your favorite treats and indulgences in moderation, savoring each bite mindfully. Remember, balance is key to maintaining a healthy relationship with food and promoting longevity. There are some treats I just can’t have around because I am unable to eat them in moderation. Know your limits.

8.  Listen To Your Body: Pay attention to how different foods make you feel, and adjust your diet accordingly. Your body is unique, and what works for others may not work for you. Trust your intuition and honor your body’s needs.  A good rule of thumb: If you think something might be irritating to you, don’t eat it for 3 weeks. Then introduce it back in to your diet, and pay close attention to how you react. Many people react poorly to gluten and/or dairy and don’t even realize it.

By nourishing your body with wholesome foods, practicing mindful eating, and embracing a balance approach to nutrition, you can support longevity, vitality, and overall well-being.
